At conference this week, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner pledged to end the spiralling cost of school uniforms by introducing a price cap.
One million children in England live in families who are forced into debt to meet the cost of school uniforms. Wakefield MP Mary Creagh welcomed the announcement, saying,
“One in three children in Wakefield live below the breadline. Buying new uniforms, shoes and P.E. kits can push local families into debt.
“That is why I brought together representatives from local schools and charities this summer to discuss how we can better re-use school uniforms. Children grow out of their clothes quickly, and throwing uniforms away wastes money and is bad for the environment.
“I welcome Labour’s pledge to cap school uniform prices which will ease the burden on families in Wakefield.”
