Zero hours contracts are a graphic symbol of what is wrong with the way this country is run – people working on contracts with no security while people at the top get away with paying zero tax. These contracts have left too many people in Wakefield not knowing how they will make ends meet from one week to the next, and unable to plan for the future.
The Tory-led Government has refused to do anything to stop this exploitation. These Victorian practices have no place in the 21st Century.
Labour has listened to businesses and listened to workers. If we win the general election, Labour will ban exploitative zero-hours contracts and give employees the legal right to:
- The right to demand a fixed-hours contract when they have worked regular hours over six months with the same employer.
- The right to receive a fixed-hours contract automatically when they have worked regular hours over a year – unless they decide to opt out.
- Refuse demands that they are available over and above their contracted hours.
- Compensation when shifts are cancelled at short notice.
A Labour government will ban exploitative zero-hours contracts. If you work regular hours you will have a legal right to a regular contract.
