Kirkgate Station opening

Mary Creagh MP said:

"I was delighted to be present at the official re-opening of Kirkgate Railway Station on Monday 14 September. In 2008 the station was described by the then Transport Secretary as one of the ‘worst medium to large stations in Britain’. After the £5.6m redevelopment, the station has been transformed.

This follows a hard-fought campaign. Only last year there was a funding shortfall following the discovery of dry rot. I wrote to the Transport Secretary to make sure the funding gap was filled.

It took 7 years, but I am proud to have played my part in getting Wakefield Kirkgate upgraded so we no longer have one of the ‘worst stations in Britain’. The community can now feel proud of their local station, and visitors will have an excellent first impression of Wakefield.”
