Mary backs David Miliband for Labour Leader
Wakefield MP Mary Creagh has given her support to David Miliband for the leadership of the Labour Party. With Mary and other supporters beside him, Mr Miliband announced his intention to stand on Wednesday 12 May. See the announcement here.
In an email to her constituents on 12 May, Mary also paid tribute to former leader Gordon Brown. She said the former Prime Minister "leaves an enormous legacy that cannot be undone quickly by the Conservative government. Because of Gordon Brown and the work of the Labour government over the last 13 years, we have a National Minimum Wage ingrained in our country. He cut income tax from 23% to 20%. He rescued our National Health Service after years of Tory neglect, and built more schools than any previous Labour chancellor. He introduced tax credits for the working poor and the Pension Credit and winter fuel allowance for pensioners. Labour will defend this legacy over the coming months and years."
