Mary welcomes £1 million pledge to plug Wakefield's potholes

The Labour Government has given Wakefield Council almost £400,000 to help repair the potholes and damage caused by the severest winter for 30 years. This is in addition to £600,000 that the Council has already pledged in this year’s budget, taking the investment in Wakefield’s roads to £1 million

The heavy snow which hit the country this winter left roads exposed to a condition known as “freeze-thaw”, which damages the roads in freezing and wet conditions.

In the Budget, Labour announced an extra £100 million funding for local authorities to help put the damage right - including an extra £8.6 million for Yorkshire and £397,500 for Wakefield. Local MP Mary Creagh welcomed the rapid and decisive action to ensure that roads in Wakefield are in the best possible condition before next winter.

Mary Creagh said: “Roads in Wakefield have taken a real battering this winter. The Council’s been working flat out to repair the most severely affected roads. I’m delighted that the government has stepped in with extra money to help.”

“I was out in Lupset at the weekend and it’s clear that Broadway urgently needs to be sorted as Heavy Good Vehicles often use it as a shortcut.”
