Mary urges action on killer drug mephedrone

Wakefield MP Mary Creagh raised concerns with the Home Secretary about the distribution of lethal drug mephedrone on Monday 15 March. The drug is sold as plant food but is being marketed to students in Leeds and Wakefield. Mephedrone, also known as meow meow or MCAT, is being linked to the deaths of two teenagers from Yorkshire in the early hours of Monday morning.  Ms Creagh has asked the Home Secretary for urgent action to stop mephedrone being dealt in our cities.

Mary Creagh said: "I was deeply shocked when I saw the leaflet on Saturday and wrote to the Home Secretary on Monday. This substance is being marketed and sold to young people for recreational purposes.  I’m concerned that unless urgent action is taken we will see other young lives needlessly wasted and more families devastated by this drug. The government is waiting for a report on mephedrone from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs this month.  We need swift action.  Mephedrone is dangerous and should be classified as a harmful, illegal drug and taken off our streets".
