Mary battles bank's decision to close branch

Mary and local councillor Lynn Masterman are opposing HSBC’s announcement that the Ossett branch of the bank will close.

Mary has written to the bank to raise her concerns, asking the bank to reconsider and allow time for a public consultation.

The bank has said that it is no longer generating the custom necessary to justify its continued operation.

HSBC have confirmed that any employees directly affected by the closure of Ossett can be redeployed to its other branches. Customers’ accounts will be automatically transferred to its Wakefield branch, four miles away.

Mary said: “I was disappointed that neither myself nor the local residents were consulted about the proposals to close the branch and were only informed once a decision had been made and a date of closure identified. I have written to the bank to ask them to reconsider and allow time for a full consultation with HSBC customers to hear their views. The next closest HSBC branch to Ossett is in Wakefield city centre, four miles away and will be difficult for elderly customers and those with mobility problems to access. This is a blow for the town centre, following the announcement of the closure of the Royal Mail Delivery Office.”
