It has been a privilege to serve as your MP for the last 10 years. In that time I have stood up for Wakefield people every step of the way.
I knocked heads together to get £4 million to refurbish Kirkgate station. I campaigned for a new station at Westgate and against Tory cuts to Wakefield NHS services.
But public services and people’s living standards have been hit hard by the Tories. The Office for Budget Responsibility has said David Cameron’s extreme plans will mean “a much sharper squeeze on spending....than anything seen over the past five years”. Police, fire service, school, social care and defence budgets will be slashed. I believe the Tory plans can only be achieved by putting the NHS at risk or raising VAT again.
Labour has a better plan:
A pay rise for hardworking Wakefield - Raise the minimum wage to £8 an hour and cut taxes for 24 million people with a 10p tax rate.
More NHS doctors and nurses - We will secure the future of our NHS with 8,000 more GPs, 20,000 more nurses, 3,000 more midwives and 5,000 more homecare workers.
Tackle the cost of living crisis - Freeze energy prices, more free childcare for three and four year olds and tackling rip-off rents.
Build a strong economy - We will balance the books and cut the deficit every year.
Control immigration with fair rules - 1,000 new border staff and immigrants won’t be able to claim benefits for two
Vote Labour on May 7th.
